KNIGHTHOOD

Isaiah Berlin is to receive his knighthood, the first Jewish philosopher to be so honored in Britain. This, of course, makes him quite nervous, and he spends days memorizing his acceptance speech, which he wishes to be a major summative statement of his contribution to philosophy. The great day comes, and despite the memorizing he is still terribly nervous. When his moment comes, and he kneels down to receive the Queen’s command, his fear takes over completely, and he forgets his prepared speech. The Queen touches her sword to both his shoulders and looks down. He is mortified, unable to recall anything, and just kneels there frozen. As the silence continues, the audience becomes jittery. The Queen, in confusion at this development, turns to the audience and asks, "Why is this knight different from all other knights?"
